If a Google Car bashes into you, can you sue Google? Or the human inside the car? What if there was no driver, just a passenger. Or how about a delivery drone that crashes into your house? Doug Vining Directing a driverless car

If you're a passenger in a driverless car, but you're telling the car where to go, what are you? Not the driver, but perhaps the 'director' of the journey. Then you should bear some responsibility for accidents. Tesla wants to introduce autopilot features that require some human decision making, like telling the car to turn by hitting the turn signal lever. Clever move.

Doug Vining Driverless cars are safer

Most car crashes are caused by human error. The first injury to a passenger in one of Google's driverless cars was caused by another driver that rear-ended them. According to Google, all the collisions involving their driverless cars during testing have been caused by careless, inattentive drivers of other cars.

But what happens when the computer makes a mistake and does hurt someone? Who will be responsible, Google, the car manufacturer, or the person in the car? That's still going to be a problem in the future, as this MindBullet suggests.

Doug Vining Road to the furture

Google calls their robocars AVs or Autonomous Vehicles. I dislike acronyms and prefer to call UAVs drones, but we haven't settled on a name for self-driving cars yet. Indeed, it seems that it will be a while before we have fully autonomous cars (autocars) and will more likely have cars with an autopilot mode for some time.

A couple of years ago we published this MindBullet that asks the question: Who is responsible when an autocar causes a crash? Well, it seems the first crash caused by the computer has finally happened. Although not serious, and probably instructive as it will help avoid similar incidents in the future, it points to the intractable problem of mixing autocars and human drivers on the same road. If all the vehicles were driven by computer, and connected to each other, they would have signalled their intentions wirelessly and avoided the collision in real time.

Which makes it all the more likely that, at some point in the future, human drivers will be banned from certain roads.

Doug Vining Uber self-driving car gets flipped

In the first recorded high-impact crash of a fully autonomous car, an Uber vehicle was flipped on its side by another car that "failed to yield" to the Uber. Apparently there was a driver behind the controls of the self-driving Uber, and no passengers. Uber is suspending testing while the incident is investigated. In due course, more of these incidents are likely, and it may delay the mass adoption of driverless cars, but eventually the technology will become mainstream. It's just a matter of time.
