Doug Vining Mexican murder rate improves

So it would seem that parts of this scenario are unfolding. Although the murder rate in Mexico is shocking, it's not that bad compared to say, South Africa, with twice as many people. If improvements continue, I can foresee a future where we look to Mexico as an example of what can be done to get back in the game.

Doug Vining Mexico's choices

Our recent MindBullet suggested that Mexico would be the star of the Latin American show in the future. That could still happen, but the Economist points out that reality is signalling differently. Growth forecasts have been revised downwards to a more humble 3.1%. But even that is significantly higher than say, Spain, albeit less than half the forecast for China.

The point here is that these are short-term reality checks. The future is still in the hands of Mexico's leaders. Will they make the right choices? SmartPlanet asks if Mexico can dismantle its monopolies in this cautionary article. The final question of this piece is also worth quoting:

"In the race for greater economic growth in Mexico, the question remains: How fast will the competition come?"

Doug Vining Middle class Mexico

In this fast changing world, where the dynamic economies are outpacing the 'old world' it often happens that the conventional wisdom is turned on its head. Now people are emigrating from Portugal and Spain to Poland and Mexico in search of better economic opportunities, and Mexicans have become too middle class to cross the border illegally into the US.
