Doug Vining iTunes No. 2 music seller in US

Apple Inc.'s online iTunes music store is now the number-two music retailer in the U.S. behind Wal-Mart Stores Inc. as measured by unit volume, market researcher NPD Group said Tuesday.

That's TOTAL music sales - not online sales!

Sony removes content approval, PS2 now open platform

The PlayStation 2 just passed its 8th birthday here in North America, and the console is still going strong. With 131.3 million units sold worldwide, Sony is looking to continue to tap into that market. To that end, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's developer relations manager George Bain has revealed that the company will be removing the content approval process in an attempt to attract smaller developers.

The global recession has hit Sony hard--the company on Thursday reported its first annual loss in 14 years. Sony lost 165 billion yen ($1.72 billion) in the quarter that ended March 3.

In an interview with Nikkei Electronics Asia, Sony CEO Howard Stringer pledged that the company would use more open standards in the future, saying "If we had gone with open technology from the start, I think we probably would have beaten Apple" in the music market.

Sony is having a hard time of it, which is strange for a company that prizes innovation so highly.
