Brett Dawson Water

There is a direct relationship between plant growth and water. To turn a desert around you'd also need water, so I'm wondering where this would come from or how it could be moved over a long distance inland? The concept of mist/fog harvesting nets could be applied to the fungus (see but I am not sure this would help further inland. Maybe one can adopt Lovelock's concept of a "super organism" (see If the fungal mass formed an integrated web of life - it could maybe transport the moisture from cell to cell and sustain new growth deep in the desert.

Doug Vining RE: Water

Water Find 'May End Darfur War' - [BBC] A huge underground lake has been found in Sudan's Darfur region, scientists say, which they believe could help end the conflict in the arid region.
Some of this water also lies beneath Egypt.

Doug Vining Food crops and forests of the future

Seven years ago we published a MindBullet that suggested the use of fungi to dramatically encourage reforestation. We speculated that this might be achieved through open innovation on Facebook. In an uncannily similar real world event, young girls living in Ireland have won the Google Science Fair with the invention of a method to increase crop yields with beneficial bacteria. Imagine the possibilities if both bacteria and symbiotic fungi were applied in combination. It just goes to show that the future will surprise us in unexpected ways, and science can help to solve some of the world's greatest problems.

Doug Vining Planting trees in the desert

Seven years ago, we published a MindBullet about how low-tech solutions to reforestation could alter the size of deserts. Now a Dutch engineer is putting that idea into practice.

Oops - it was 10 years ago that we wrote this scenario - and the dateline was for 2017!
