hmm. The users that were responsible for the social networking phenomenon are not to be underestimated. Any hint of 'big corporateness' and they may flee (the primary reason that Microsoft's faliling attempts in this space has failed, is that they are seen as grey suits).

There is far less stickiness in this stuff than one might think, and a viral anti-Murdoch campaign, plus a cool new place to hang out, may upset the corporate apple cart.

On the other hand, Murdoch is absolutely the smartest guy around media, no one else comes close. So if anyone can pull this off, he can.
