Fuel from the forests
Posted: 7 June 2012

How about this source of fuel from wood pulp? Could it be the start of a new energy paradigm in Europe? Paper and pulp factories require a lot of energy to keep them functioning, but they also produce a lot of power from their own resources. It may be worthwhile to divert one of their fuel by-products to transport rather than just heating requirements, particularly if the demand for liquid fuels keeps prices high. Sweden is certainly rich in forest resources.

In related news, the Financial Times and other publications report that Europe is increasingly facing a dilemma between clean energy support and austerity measures required by the debt crisis. Faced with the harsh realities of economics, perhaps the EU obsession with carbon emissions will decline, boosting global demand for oil yet again.
