The Asian tsnunami caused global response that unified nations in the process. Not sure if a massive US calamity would have the same result...maybe everyone will look on and say "Tough!"

A physical stock exchange can be easily replicated especially with distributed computing power - overall market disruption may be temporary and sectors may be differently affected but overall economic effect may be muted...Detroit will still sell cars (perhaps even more), Walmart will still sell goods etc. etc. Steel prices will spike, building boom will happen, energy demands will spike etc.
