The Information Economy, today's so-called Digital Economy, is maturing.

Beyond an explosion in eCommerce, the PC as we know it may disappear and jobs in high-tech industries that brought spectacular growth in the 1980s and 1990s may be lost. In the 4th quarter of its lifecycle this economy will exhibit the same pressures as the Industrial Economy is today.

While we contemplate the end of this economy, another major phenomenon appears to be germinating in laboratories and markets around the world. A combination of nanotechnology, biotechnology and a new understanding of complex natural systems are creating the infrastructure for a radical new economic paradigm - the Bio Economy.

Concepts like nano-technology, genetically-modified food and drugs, and cloning, have already captured world headlines and the imaginations of millions - their implications are being hotly debated. What if life-expectancy doubled in the next 20 years?

This session explores the technologies and products of this emerging new Economy and the complex implications for individuals, business and governments, with a special focus on the issues facing Africa in open global markets.
